Tucker High School's STAR co-hosted a 2-day refugee panel in late January with a partnering social enterprise based in Wellesley, MA called Next Page. We invited two students from Tucker High School from Myanmar and Eritrea to share their experiences about coming to the U.S. In all, we had about 60 attendees, and they were able to ask many questions to our panelists! This gave voice to our panelists and provided them with a platform to speak on!

Coat Drive

Tucker High School STAR

Tucker High School's STAR hosted a coat drive in January. We collected coats and donated them to the International Rescue Committee of Atlanta! They all went towards efforts to support 25 refugee families that the IRC in Atlanta welcomed to a new home in 2020. More information is listed in their newsletter here.

"Tucker High School’s STAR volunteered at Indian Creek Elementary School’s Christmas Party/Toy Drive in Clarkston, GA. We were in charge of the Arts & Crafts table and helped children make  paper snowflakes! It was a very good experience and the children seemed to enjoy themselves very much! The parents were also engaged in the event, as they were able to purchase toys for their children for lower prices. The proceeds went to fund the PTA at Indian Creek Elementary. It was overall a great turn out and was for a great cause. A great thanks also goes to Friends of Refugees!"

Outing at Jolly Avenue Garden

Tucker STAR is off to a great start for the 2021-2022 school year with the first event being an outing at the Jolly Avenue Garden. The Jolly Avenue Garden offers a space for refugees to have their own area of land where they are free to grow whatever they would like such as fruits and vegetables. Many of these refugees were used to growing their own food in their home country, so the Jolly Avenue Garden allows them to feel a little at home! STAR contributed by doing things such as mowing the grass, pulling weeds, and other tasks to make the Gardens look a little bit better than they were when they first came!

Tucker High School's STAR was able to have a tent and table set up at Tucker's Socially Distant Night Out. STAR is working with a social enterprise based in Wellesley, Massachusetts called Next Page. Next Page works with local artists in the community to sell vases/art and proceeds go to refugees. In collaboration with Next Page, STAR raised $100 for refugees in Yemen, Tanzania and Lebanon. We were able to talk to the community about refugees and refugee issues. It was a great event and we look forward to working with Next Page further to assist refugees.
